Wellbeing Doesn't Need a Big Budget
Staff wellbeing often gets filed under "nice to have" rather than "must do", particularly for small businesses watching every line of the budget. But supporting your team doesn't have to mean expensive perks or a dedicated wellbeing programme. Some of the most effective steps cost little or nothing at all.
Start with the basics
Simple things make a real difference - regular one-to-ones where staff feel genuinely heard, clear boundaries around working hours and a workplace culture where it's normal to ask for help. Encouraging proper breaks, even a short walk at lunchtime, can lift mood and concentration without costing a penny. None of this needs a policy document.
Low-cost ways to go further
Flexibility is one of the most valued benefits going, and for many small businesses it's also one of the cheapest to offer. Adjusting start times, allowing occasional working from home or being flexible around appointments can go a long way. Recognition matters too. A genuine thank you, publicly or privately, costs nothing and is often underused.

Where the Chamber can help
As a Chamber member, you have access to support that makes wellbeing easier to deliver without building it from scratch. The Westfield Health Chamber Primary Health Plan is available from £7.41 per employee per month, and includes benefits like DoctorLine, a 24-hour GP telephone service, and access to counselling sessions including CBT. It's a straightforward way to give staff a safety net beyond what many small businesses could otherwise offer.
Quest, included as part of your membership, also gives you HR and health and safety advice lines, which can be useful if you're working out how to handle a wellbeing-related issue fairly and correctly.
Getting started
You don't need to introduce everything at once. Pick one or two changes that suit your business and build from there. To find out more about Westfield Health or Quest as part of your membership, get in touch at [email protected] or visit www.eastrenchamber.org.uk.
